Rationing if water levels in dams reach critical level
KUALA KUBU BARU: Almost two million residents in the Klang Valley and Putrajaya will face a critical water supply problem if the current dry spell persists for the next three weeks.
Deputy Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said water reserves at two dams in Selangor and one in Negri Sembilan had fallen to below 60 per cent of capacity due to a lack of rainfall.
The water reserve level at the Sungai Selangor dam has dropped to 57.6 per cent, which was the lowest in 10 years, while the level at the Klang Gate dam stood at 58 per cent.
He said the Kelinchi dam in Negri Sembilan was also facing a similar problem with a 58.6 per cent reserve level.
“If there is still no rainfall in the next three weeks, water reserves at the dams will drop to below 45 per cent.
"The situation remains under control, but if the dry spell continues, water reserves will reach a critical level and the government will need to adopt water rationing," Mahdzir said after visiting the Sungai Selangor dam here yesterday.
The Sungai Selangor dam in Kuala Kubu Baru, here, meets 60 per cent of the water needs in the Klang Valley. He said the dam supplies 1,600 million litres of water per day, but if the dry spell persists, there was a possibility that rationing would be carried out. Mahdzir said the ministry was considering cloud seeding in the vicinity of the dam.
"Cloud seeding will be conducted at the Sungai Selangor catchment and other areas if water levels at the dams drop to 45 per cent or 103.5 million cubic metres," he said, adding that he had ordered a meeting between the parties concerned to draw up measures to deal with the situation. He said the drop in water levels was due to increased use of water in the Klang Valley.
On the water levels at dams in other states, he said the situation in Kedah, Perlis and Penang was under control.
On another matter, Mahdzir said the ministry would discuss with the Selangor government and water utility operators in the state to swiftly resolve outstanding issues regarding the Langat 2 treatment plant project.
The completion of the project would allow water to be channelled from Pahang to meet the increasing demand for clean water in the Klang Valley.
"Langat 2 will give us an additional source of water of up to 1,130 million litres per day."
